021: around the world, around the world
The next time I decide that I would like to branch out and try something different, I would appreciate it if someone would intervene and dissuade me.

[Charlie, Annie, Violet, Benita, and Tibby]

Specifically, I would like the five of you to convince me that I don't want to retrace Darwin's voyage on the H.M.S. Beagle over September break. Dad's friends with the Modern Mariner, and I think he could get me a ship & robotic crew.

A single bad experience should not color your opinion of all potential experiences. At worst, you should avoid the genre of the activity you didn't enjoy.

I don't know what's gotten into me -- perhaps I've cracked under the pressure of finals. However, the more I think about it, the less certain I am that it's a bad idea.

Yeah! It sounds like it would be an adventure, and not in the Neopolitan, "Oh no, I got sucked into a time warp/hell dimension" sort of way.

In the interest of transparency, I must admit that part of the reason the idea seems so bizarrely appealing is that I will be going almost as far away from this city and school as it is possible to go without being Hanselle Alter and the Walkers.

talking to the wrong nerd to dissuade, sorry to say. i guess i could say 'no' due to the fact that it would strike up immense envy in my shriveled heart?

You are all missing the point of this filter.

However, assuming that Violet and Annie are equally as ineffective at dissuading me, you could come if you wanted. The original plan -- idea, rather, since I haven't actually thought through this quite so far as to have a solid plan -- was me and the robots, as I didn't believe that anyone else would be quite this insane.

you may be talking to the incorrect contingent, i confess, given that you have addressed a majority of individuals who would probably risk life and limb to go on a nerdtrek. such is the lot of neopolitan nerds.

mechanic, at the least. benita has a point: the modern mariner is reputable, so it's not as [...] risky, as it were.

True, the Modern Mariner is reputable. More important, I suppose, is the fact that he still owes my dad one for fixing the Wave Transverser two years ago.

Nevertheless, I'd foolishly hoped that I'd get a more proportional dissuading from my filter than from the school at large. This all stems from a stupid idea I had after calculating that I can hope for no better than a C- in Professor Renfield's class, and even that would require me to have aced the final, which I am highly doubting I did.

I don't know -- I haven't actually thought ahead quite that far. Right now, the most likely scenario seems to be myself alone with a crew of the Modern Mariner's robots for either a month at sea, or however long it takes for me to get back to England.

Correct. The one you usually display is hardly given to surprising me. Thus, the evidence suggests it is a new and thus unquantified one.

It's a compliment, of sorts.
