I suppose a question that runs through every student's mind is, "When am I ever going to use this?" Perhaps, even more cynically, one might wonder, "What's the point of it all?" I, for one, certainly have had my own moments of questioning about my fair share of classes in the past. In fact, I have another one every time I step into the classroom of a certain requisite class with which we are all familiar.

However, I would posit that not all knowledge necessarily requires a practical application. I simply cannot fathom a situation in which I might need to know that Olea laurifolia sinks in water or that there are at least sixty different ethnic groups in the Côte d'Ivoire alone, but aren't they nice things to know? Similarly, unless one is an engineer (holla), one may never find a practical use for differential calculus. However, isn't the satisfaction of learning it great enough?

By the by, would anyone in Professor Renfield's exploration class like to study with me? I'm afraid I'm failing I'm not doing as well in the practicals are killing my I haven't got quite as thorough an understanding of the material as I would like.

In ADDITION to all this lovely gobbeldy-gook, I should like to point out that the mere action of learning strengthens the brain itself. QUITE literally, in the case of neurons.

Thank you, doctor, I agree wholeheartedly -- one might say that, at its most basic level, the brain is simply a muscle, and like all muscles, it must be exercised.

USE IT or LOSE IT, as 'they' say!

Agreed. Though it took me a while to learn it.

And obviously I'm not in the class, but I'd be happy to try and study with you, if you like. All I

I must admit, I've always had a sort of intellectual curiosity about the world, but there are some things I couldn't bring myself to want to learn.

We could meet in the library and do our respective readings together, possibly. I've got quite a bit of reading left to do before finals.

My main problem with the exploration class is that I haven't got quite the practical experience or field knowledge as the other students in the class, and my grade is suffering for it. I've never done this badly in a class before, and it's -- worrisome.

Nothing is entirely certain, is it? Aside from many things being nice to know in of themselves, when it comes to the obscure or the (arguably, seemingly) useless, I like to remind myself that I may need it again one day for some practical purpose I simply can't anticipate. I submit May's time travel incident as an example; there are all sorts of things I used in 1925 for which I never thought I'd find a practical use.

That is quite true. I believe the "it's Neopolis" argument applies here -- living here vastly increases one's chances of encountering a situation in which it might be useful to have an arsenal of esoteric facts and knowledge at one's disposal.

Are you talking about Personal Development?

The "certain requisite class with which we are all familiar" is Personal Development, yes.

I'm failing it on purpose which is harder than you'd think.

You mean to say you have to actively try in order to fail?

Seems that way. I'm not actually sure what I'm getting, I'm just assuming.
