016: mandy goes to med school
[Annie]

How far along are you in the reading I gave you on Wednesday? I don't mean to nag, but I had an idea -- I'm actually a bit surprised at how simplistic it is. In any event, the idea is this: you can make carbonated Kool-Aid, which is made up of flavor particles and gas dissolved in water; blood is primarily made up of blood cells suspended in plasma, which is essentially the same concept, given that plasma is almost entirely composed of water. Naturally, there are a few crucial differences, since there's all manner of molecules (such as proteins and minerals and the like) dissolved in it, but you oughtn't have a problem with the carbon dioxide, at the very least.

In any event, what I am trying to say is that the first step in transmuting blood, therefore, isn't to focus on things like hemoglobin -- although that, of course, is an important part and must come at some stage -- but to provide a basic plasma solution and build from there -- do you think this is plausible? Honestly, I'm kicking myself a bit for not thinking of it earlier. If you manage to transmute plasma and blood separately, it might even open up options in plasmapheresis treatments and the like.

I've got access to a centrifuge in the labs, and we can separate some blood cells from the plasma sometime, if you'd like to get a "feel" for it.

How are you, by the by? We haven't really talked in quite a bit.

[/Annie]

I hate to be a bother, but I believe I am speaking for more than just myself when I humbly suggest that whoever is blasting "Hey There, Delilah" on repeat in the Science dorms please invest in a pair of headphones. If you would like to borrow some, you are welcome to stop by my room (104) and borrow my spare pair.

Furthermore, would anyone be interested in a game of tennis on Saturday? It isn't meant to be any warmer, but if the forecast is to be trusted, it ought to be a bit less cloudy.

I'm... about halfway? Maybe? I'm sorta boggled at how much reading I have for my classes already this semester and between that, this, and other things taking up my time that I will address in a minute, I haven't gotten through as much as I've wanted. That and I keep opening up my biology textbook to refresh my memory on some of the things I've forgot since high school. Also it's a little boring.

Howeverrrrr, I think that sounds like a good idea. I don't really know if the suspended particle aspect of would affect things - I'm guessing that it's good that I can already do it with the Kool-Aid and that it's probably slightly harder since it was the last thing I added to it, but I can't be positive.

Of course, we also can't know until we try, and this all seems pretty logical and I think my powers tend to work logically, so here's to hoping? I think the centrifuge is a good idea, definitely.

The one thing that does concern me - normally I judge how my creations work by taste and base all my adjustments on that too. I've never really done it another way...

Anddddd, I've been good though I haven't been doing much. June is a pretty sharp contrast to May so far and idk if that's good or bad but aside from classwork and just the general routine I'm getting into, I also discovered Hulu (ok i knew it existed I just never used it) and am now almost done with season 3 of Buffy. Again. I watched four episodes yesterday.

You can take your time with it. This is, after all, your project, and not mine. Thus, you dictate the pace. I just wanted to gauge about how much you knew before I started spouting off technical terms at you.

There are a few other dilemmas, though the main one I can think of is the antibodies: do you synthesize antibodies into the plasma solution, or hold off until you can produce plasma cells to create them? Antibodies are important in plasmapheresis treatments, but if you'd rather focus on the main goal of creating viable blood, then it's much simpler to ignore them at this stage.

If you think it will help you to drink blood, then by all means. However, if you'd rather not, I'm sure some sort of microscope comparison ought to be at least a little helpful.

I suppose I'm about the same. I haven't been on Hulu lately, but, with regards to actual classwork, you sound about as productive as I do.

ahhh okay. Well, go for the technical terms and if I don't know them I'll ask. I do want to keep motivated on this (so I'm just going to pretend you are not this relaxed with the pace) or I will end up watching everything on Hulu before I finish the reading which is not a good idea.

I... don't know. I think I probably won't know until we get into the lab and I just start trying things and see if they're in there. I don't like the idea of tasting blood if I don't have to, especially if it's not really blood and instead it's some part-blood crazy hybrid something that might look like blood. There are ways to test for all these antibodies that we have access to, right?

We are two of a kind then. Apparently we need more exciting lives? I find this ironic given the school we go to.

Maybe it's a psych experiment. Just how many plays of "Delilah" can the subjects stand before they all lose their minds?

And I'm up for tennis this Saturday, if no one's taken you up on the offer yet.
