I don't know. People have really bad senses of humor.

I'm not talking about anyone people at this school know, though.

Hello Steve Glass-Newton! I am concerned for Hydro Man. The likelier story is that Mrs. Hydro Man is a bunny rabbit.

I've always heard the story told with the rodent in question being a gerbil.

False, Steve Glass-Newton. Gerbils are honorable. Bunnies are not to be trusted.

Story of my life. I'd only hoped I wouldn't ever be graded based upon them.

Er, yes. It's a bit complicated, but I admit I have been known as "Mr. Inertia's kid" for much of my life. Nevertheless, I'd hoped that, lately, I've been able to establish myself as my own person, with my own "shtick," as it were, which has nothing to do with manipulating the laws of physics. However, turning in my costume design today, I received comments about how I ought to have incorporated "legacy elements."

[...] Have you thought about appealing? I'm not really positive what the guidelines for grading the assignment were, but--it would seem reasonable enough.

True, a rubric would have been nice appreciated. However, despite my personal feelings on the comparison, I would rather not make a big deal out of presume that it was the determining factor behind my grade. After all, I can't claim to be a master of aesthetics, and the look was rather derivative from sources with connotations I ought to have avoided, all things considered.

Fair enough. What did your costume look like?

Not terribly complicated, I'm afraid; the actual "costume" portion of it consisted of little more than a lab coat and goggles. All told, it was a bit more reminiscent of Dr. Horrible's attire than I'd have liked. I suppose I could see it easily being B- material.

Nevertheless, the legacy comments were less than appreciated.

Maybe just--yet another indication of the community's preoccupation with tradition. Even at a place like this.

I rly hope that was just a "clever suggestion" and didn't actually factor into your grade. Because that's just stupid.

I wouldn't presume I warranted much better than the grade I received. Nevertheless, I can't say the "clever suggestion" was much appreciated.

Is it odd that, of all the pressure I've ever felt to be more like my father, none of it has been from him?

Odd, maybe, but I wouldn't say it's necessarily bad. Would you rather be getting it from him too?

idk. I'm not too sure what it's all like, since it's really effing hard to compare me to Dad. I'm "Bud's daughter" a lot, but there's always been other implications behind that, like "Bud's cute little daughter" or "Bud's daughter who is going to be hot someday" or "Bud's daughter who is almost legal" or "Bud's daughter but if I say anything he might kick me out." But he's not famous (well, outside of the bar), which probably also plays a big part in it?

I suppose. It just seems a bit odd, since all signs I've noticed seem to indicate he doesn't want an Inertia legacy.

Truth be told, I do get "Mr. Inertia's son" more than anything else. He's not hugely famous, and I am fairly used to being known for him. The suggestions that I mold myself in his image, however? Those strike a different chord, so to speak.

apparently costumes have to be as obvious and tacky as fucking possible or else you're doing it wrong.

The lack of a rubric did make me question the subjectivity, I admit. I'm fairly certain mine unequivocally said, "lab junkie," although nowhere did it explicitly say, "Mr. Inertia's son," which may have posed a problem.
